MILLISECOND PULSAR SEARCHES Results and Future Prospects
نویسندگان
چکیده
We discuss results of various surveys for millisecond radio pulsars, and make some comments on possible properties of the underlying population. Results of the Arecibo surveys indicate a density of millisecond pulsars (250 deg 2) ?1 above a threshold level of 1 mJy for long-period pulsars. Parkes results are consistent with Arecibo's after scaling to account for Parkes' baseline sensitivity of 3 mJy. Working with a sample of 15 binary millisecond \\eld" pulsars, we nd a hint of a deecit of pulsars with \intermediate" orbital periods, 12 d < P b < 67 d, which we cannot account for by selection eeects. We note that after accounting for kinematic biasing eeects, the intrinsic \spindown" age of a substantial fraction (1=3) of all eld millisecond pulsars is likely larger than the age of the Galactic disk. Resolution of this apparent paradox has consequences for initial spin periods of millisecond pulsars, and mass accretion rates in the low mass X-ray binary phase of their evolution. We brieey discuss some technical details and consider aspects of new search eeorts now underway, as well as future prospects. We exclude from review directed searches of stellar globular clusters.

Pulsar Searches of Unidentified EGRET Sources
The majority of Galactic high-energy γ-ray sources continue to elude identification. Currently, we have a handful of firm pulsar identifications, one of which is radio quiet, and a few marginal detections, including one millisecond pulsar. Recently, both blind searches of EGRET error boxes and targeted searches of X-ray counterpart candidates have had some success in finding new pulsars. I revi...
متن کاملPulsar Timing
The motivation for radio pulsar timing and its basic principles are reviewed. Present and future radio timing techniques and hardware are summarised and compared. The array of present timing programmes and their scientific goals are collated and described. Recent results and future prospects are discussed, with emphasis on multi-wavelength techniques where appropriate. Timing of radio pulsars a...
متن کاملNew Binary and Millisecond Pulsars from Arecibo Drift-Scan Searches
We discuss four recycled pulsars found in Arecibo drift-scan searches. PSR J1944+0907 has a spin period of 5.2ms and is isolated. The 5.8-ms pulsar J1453+19 may have a low-mass companion. The isolated 56-ms pulsar J0609+2130 is possibly the remnant of a disrupted double neutron star binary. The 41-ms pulsar J1829+2456 is in a relativistic orbit; its companion is most likely another neutron star.
متن کاملHigh-precision Timing of Millisecond Pulsars and Precision Astrometry
We present the technique of long-term, high-precision timing of millisecond pulsars as applied to precision astrometry. We provide a tutorial on pulsars and pulsar timing, as well as up-to-date results of long-term timing observations of two millisecond pulsars, PSRs B1855+09 and B1937+21. We consider the feasibility of tying the extragalactic and optical reference frames to that deened by sola...
متن کاملBinary Pulsar Discoveries in the Parkes Multibeam Survey
The Parkes Multibeam survey has been very successful and has discovered about half of the known pulsars. Of these several are binary and millisecond pulsars. In this paper I discuss the procedures that are used for detecting binary pulsars and the current selection effects which arise because of limited data processing. While these selection effects are significant, many interesting binary syst...
